In the morning, visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (closed on Monday, Friday and during the entire months of September & October) and his former residence (closed on Monday and Friday), One-Pillar Pagoda and the Hanoi Citadel (closed on Monday and Friday):
Constructed under the Ly Dynasty in 1010, the Hanoi Citadel functioned as Royal Palace of the Tran & Le Dynasties for eight centuries. Its importance faded when the rulers of the Nguyen Dynasty moved the Imperial Capital from Hanoi to Hue in 1810. Hanoi’s status consequently shifted from a capital city to the seat of the provincial government. In 1945, Thang Long or “Ascending Dragon” as Hanoi is known in Vietnamese was once again appointed as capital city and has maintained its status ever since. See the pair of stone dragons, perhaps the only remains of the ancient Kinh Thien Palace. Visit Doan Mon (the main gate to the ancient forbidden city) and Hau Lau, one of the few remaining structures of the old citadel. Part of the ancient Thang Long Royal Citadel, the archeological site across the Hoang Dieu Street reveals the magnificence of the ancient capital and contributed in large to the decision of UNESCO to enlist Thang Long Royal Citadel as a World Cultural Heritage. The archeological site is open to public on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Continue to visit the Temple of Literature, known as the first university of Vietnam and built more than 1,000 years ago. The stone steles bearing names of doctoral laureates have been listed by UNESCO as World Documentary Heritage.

In the afternoon, visit Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple. Take a one-hour cyclo ride and then attend a performance of the Vietnam’s famous folk art of water puppetry.
